A Senate hearing on the recruitment of Kenyans into the Russian military has been rescheduled for 29 September after key government officials did not attend the earlier session.

Parliament’s account says the 15 September joint committee hearing was adjourned because senators wanted officials present to hear families’ evidence and answer their questions directly.

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi and Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua cited a Cabinet meeting in Kisumu. The Attorney-General’s office said the Attorney-General was out of town. Those explanations are recorded in Parliament’s report of the proceedings.

Relatives had travelled to address the committees about family members who died, disappeared or were caught up in the war. The committees are examining recruitment arrangements and the government’s efforts to secure the release and return of affected Kenyans.

The next hearing is an accountability step, not a finding of criminal responsibility against named individuals. Officials’ attendance and the answers given to families will be the immediate developments to follow on 29 September.
