Jubilee’s planned leadership transition has opened a debate over who should succeed Uhuru Kenyatta, with Jeremiah Kioni declaring an interest and supporters of Fred Matiang’i making their own case.
The Star reported on 18 September that Kioni had offered himself for the party leadership after Kenyatta signalled his intention to hand over. Kioni said he would seek support from members and delegates and argued that the National Delegates Convention should determine the outcome.
The newspaper also reported that Matiang’i’s allies viewed the party’s presidential choice as the natural successor. That support is a political argument, rather than evidence that the leadership position has already been settled.
The distinction between leading the party and carrying its presidential ticket is central to the transition. Jubilee still has to communicate the process through which its own institutions will decide the leadership question.
Members should watch for an official timetable, nomination rules and a delegates’ decision. Until those steps are documented, declarations of support should not be confused with a completed succession.
