Fred Matiang’i has pushed back against President William Ruto’s description of Uhuru Kenyatta’s opposition role, saying lawful criticism of the government should not be treated as rebellion.

The Star reported that Ruto, speaking in Siaya on 15 September, said the retired president should act as a statesman rather than lead opposition activity. The remarks came amid debate over Kenyatta’s continued involvement in party leadership.

Responding on 16 September, Matiang’i said public demands for jobs and relief from living costs should be understood as citizens’ own concerns. He rejected the idea that opposition activity could simply be explained through a political sponsor.

The exchange exposes a disagreement over the role former presidents and opposition parties should play between elections. Ruto argued for a different public posture from his predecessor; Matiang’i defended political participation and scrutiny of the current administration.

Their competing positions should be assessed separately from claims about who finances individual political activities. This report does not establish any financing allegation.
