Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has declared her intention to seek the presidency in 2032 and pressed for women's inclusion in negotiations over the deputy presidency ahead of 2027.

KBC reported that Waiguru made the declaration at a G7 women's leadership forum on October 13. She cited her public-service experience and urged women to organise and support one another across political divides.

The governor also criticised the continuing difficulty of implementing gender representation commitments. Her message linked individual ambition to the wider task of opening leadership opportunities for women.

Waiguru's statement sets out her intentions. It does not mean she has been selected as President William Ruto's running mate, obtained a presidential nomination or secured a coalition agreement for either election.

Political Headache analysis: The announcement gives two different time horizons to her national ambitions. The nearer question concerns influence in the 2027 negotiations; the longer one concerns a presidential bid that would still require organisation, a programme and electoral support.

Coverage should keep those stages distinct. Seeking consideration for a role is not the same as holding it, and a declaration five years ahead of a contest does not settle the candidates who will ultimately compete.

The practical next development would be an adopted party position or an identifiable negotiating arrangement. Until then, Waiguru has made her ambitions explicit and challenged other leaders to treat women's claims to senior office as part of normal political competition.
