Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has proposed relocating the military airbase in Eastleigh, saying the growth of settlements around the installation has changed the conditions in which it operates.

People Daily reported that Sakaja raised the issue before the Roads and Construction Committee on October 13. He argued that the concentration of people nearby created security concerns and called for a review of restrictions affecting the surrounding area.

Sakaja acknowledged that the proposal might meet resistance from military authorities. He also pointed to the President's role in any change to the restrictions. The report does not announce an approved relocation programme, an alternative site or a timetable.

During the same appearance, the governor sought stronger measures against developers who breach building approvals. That is a separate planning issue, although both interventions concern how Nairobi manages development in constrained spaces.

Political Headache analysis: Relocating a military installation would involve questions that a county proposal alone cannot settle. Public discussion needs a clear account of the agencies responsible, the evidence behind the security assessment and the implications for neighbouring residents and businesses.

Residents should not mistake the remarks for an eviction notice or a confirmed change in planning rules. Any operational decision would require its own formal communication.

For now, Sakaja has placed a proposal before legislators. The next meaningful development would be an official response explaining whether it will be assessed, by whom and through what process.
