President William Ruto has appointed Nelson Marwa as chairperson of the Nairobi Rivers Commission, according to reports citing Gazette Notice 16248 dated 16 October.
Citizen Digital’s account says Marwa’s three-year term took effect on that date and that the same notice revoked Margaret Wanjiru’s appointment.
Marwa previously served as Devolution principal secretary and Coast regional commissioner. He takes up a role connected to the coordination of efforts to restore the Nairobi River Basin.
The appointment changes the commission’s leadership. It should not be read as evidence that river-cleaning targets have been met, that pollution has ended or that a new works contract has been awarded.
The practical test for the commission remains coordination across the institutions responsible for restoration and pollution control. The published appointment reports do not set out a fresh budget or new project timetable.
