Leaders gathering for the first anniversary of Raila Odinga’s death used the Bondo commemoration to explain how they believe his political work should be carried forward.

Edwin Sifuna thanked supporters who had worked with him during his time as ODM secretary-general and stressed persuasion and citizens’ welfare. Babu Owino framed leadership around service and resistance to injustice.

Kalonzo Musyoka invoked the unfinished journey associated with Raila’s long-running political message. His words linked remembrance with the aspirations of supporters still seeking political change.

The speeches came as leaders associated with Raila pursue different organisations and approaches to the 2027 election. The gathering did not resolve those differences or establish a common opposition ticket.

The anniversary was first a memorial for Raila and an occasion for his family and supporters to remember him. Political claims made there must still be assessed as claims by the individual speakers.

Crowd reactions at one gathering cannot establish national voting intentions. The more consequential test will be how the leaders translate their stated values into programmes, candidate choices and conduct.
