Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has directed that the Gakindu Economic Stimulus Programme market in Mukurweini be completed by December 31, while saying public development should reach constituencies regardless of their MPs' political allegiance.

The Star reported that Kindiki inspected the Nyeri County project on October 13 and put its progress at 20 per cent. He also said a new contractor would take over the stalled Mukurweini Central modern market project.

Kindiki framed service delivery as an obligation to citizens and said the government intended to complete projects across all 290 constituencies. Those are commitments; the remarks do not demonstrate that every project is already complete or fully financed.

Political Headache analysis: The named market and deadline provide a more specific accountability measure than a general national promise. Traders can follow whether the work reaches the stated milestone and whether the completed facility is ready for use.

The contractor change at Mukurweini Central is a separate project decision. Public updates should keep the two markets distinct so progress at one is not mistaken for progress at the other.

A useful follow-up would explain remaining work, any revised contract arrangements and responsibility for meeting the deadline. Completion should mean a usable market with the necessary services, rather than only a ceremony.

Kindiki's wider promise also invites consistent reporting across constituencies. The test is the delivery record and the published criteria for investment, alongside the administration's assurance that political differences will not determine access.
